Privacy Policy
Effective 19 October 2026. This policy covers the Proximity Maps website and iOS app.
The short version
- There are no accounts. We never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- No advertising, no analytics or tracking SDKs, and we do not sell or share personal data.
- Your saved places, favorite homes and settings stay on your device.
- Your location is used only on your device, only when you tap the locate button.
Stored on your device
Your saved places, favorite homes, filters, lifestyle answers and color theme are kept in your browser's or the app's local storage, along with cached routes and place lists that make the map faster. None of it is sent to us. Clearing this site's data in your browser, or deleting the app, removes all of it.
Your location
If you tap the locate button, your device's location is used to center the map on where you are. It is not sent to our servers or stored. As with any map, the map tiles for the area on screen are downloaded from our map provider. You can turn location access off at any time in your device or browser settings; everything else keeps working.
What is sent to the services that power the map
To draw the map and compute travel times, some requests leave your device:
- Map tiles are loaded from OpenFreeMap. Optional weather radar comes from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet, and average-temperature data from Open-Meteo.
- Routes and drive times: the coordinates of the home you open and of each destination are sent to the OSRM routing service run by FOSSGIS (routing.openstreetmap.de). Your own location is never part of these requests.
- Place search: the business name you search for and the visible map area are sent to our server, which looks them up with OpenStreetMap's Nominatim and Overpass services. Results are cached on our server for up to a day.
- Street View photos: the coordinates of the listing you open are sent to our server, which fetches the image from Google's Street View Static API. We log those listing coordinates and the time, to keep usage within a monthly budget.
- Listings are loaded from our database, hosted by Supabase.
Diagnostics
When one of those services fails, the app sends a short error report to our server — which service failed, the error message, and the page (or “ios-app”). It contains no identifiers and is used only to find and fix outages.
Server logs
Our hosting provider, Vercel, processes standard request information such as IP address and browser type in order to serve the site and protect it from abuse. We do not combine it with anything else.
Children
Proximity Maps is a home-search tool for adults and is not directed at children under 13.
